Rethinking Employee Communications: Your Unknown “Silent Majority”

“Employee Communications” has traditionally been a top-down process: management distributed documents and memos from the “top-down,” while employees communicated through email, intranets and phone calls.

However, there is a disconnect with this status quo and how employees are communicating with each other today.

We need to take another look at how companies communicate with employees. First, let’s recognize the state of today’s workforce. According to the Deloitte Millennial Survey, millennials will constitute 75% of your workforce by 2025. Personally, I have spoken with a global consulting firm with 300,000 people who report 65% of employees are under 34 years old. This workforce, your workforce, is social-minded and mobile powered. And this is not a generational thing: we are all mobile enabled. Think about it; when was the last time you left your phone behind?

Second, how is this millennial-minded workforce communicating with each other, the most-trusted form of communication? It’s clear mobile and social technologies are the heart of the communications engine for today’s employees. Over 50% of all employees are already posting on social media, yet according to a recent Gallup poll, only 13% of employees worldwide are engaged at work.

#EmployeeAdvocacy Starts With Employee Engagement

I’d suggest social technology platforms are the “distribution channels” for your workforce to receive company communications. They give you the infrastructure to inform all employees with the highest-value, most current content and engage employees with content they can easily access via mobile; content that keeps them in the know with company news and is shareable with their social networks.
