Redefining the Distributed Workforce, and How It Communicates


Disparate and distributed workforces have been around for a while. Think about a global car manufacturer that has workers on factory floors in countries around the world, or fast food franchises that have hundreds of locations in dozens of cities. Employee Communications within these companies might consist of a corkboard in the break room, inter-office mail deliveries, or corporate emails and an intranet. In fact, in a recent Mindshare study, 87% of employees today typically receive company information via email, intranet, or in-person.

This current state of Employee Communications is inefficient and antiquated. News from leadership and communications executives is not filtering down to these employees on the shop floor or in the local franchise. And these employees want the current and best information about their employers. The aforementioned Mindshare study also found that 66% of employees believe they are an advocate for their company, but only 37% have ever shared company news or information on their social channels. This is a great segue to talk about the 21st century distributed workforce. While the traditional physically-distributed workforce, described above, is still in play, we as communications professionals must now also deal with the digitally-distributed workforce. I’m talking about mobile. Today, we are all digital natives and mobile-enabled. Our mobile phones are always within hand’s reach or eyesight. We see this digitally distributed workforce as an opportunity to get your carefully created content into employees’ hands in a personalized and sharable way. Employee Advocacy platforms enable an efficient way of sharing your best content with your employees.
